Melissa McKeown, Chair

Community Shelter of Union County, Monroe
Melissa began her career in Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services in 2002. In 2010, Melissa
joined the staff of the Community Shelter and currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer. She
was instrumental in the creation of the Community Shelter’s successful Rapid Rehousing Program, Home
Again Furniture Donation Program and Post Housing Case Management Program.
Melissa developed the local Union County Homeless partners group that began in 2012, and has
grown into a nonprofit called Thrive! Melissa serves as vice chair and manages monthly meetings
with providers who impact homeless services in Union County. She is the point of contact with
Union County Public Schools and McKinney Vento services for homeless children. Melissa also is a
certified SOAR case worker and an advocate for street outreach. Through this work, she is a leader and
innovator in rehousing the chronically homeless in Union County. Melissa also serves as Chair on the
board of directors for the North Carolina Coalition to End Homelessness.
