Orange County Homeless Programs Intern


General Statement of Duties
The Homeless Programs Intern will be the primary event coordinator and point of contact for the 2017 Project Connect community services exposition and the 2018 census of people experiencing homelessness, the 2018 Point-in-Time count. The intern will also assist with meeting preparation and follow-up, external communications, and other tasks as assigned. The intern will work up to 20 hours per week on a flexible schedule.
Distinguishing Features of the Position
An employee in this position works with providers, volunteers, County and municipal staff, elected officials, and people who are experiencing homelessness to advance the work of the Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness.   Work is performed under supervision of the Homeless Programs Coordinator.

Illustrative Examples of Work
Coordinates event planning and implementation for Project Connect, to take place in October 2017.
Coordinates volunteers, donations, and logistics for the Point-in-Time count to take place in January 2018.
Assists Homeless Programs Coordinator with ongoing meeting preparation and follow-up including: agenda prep, meeting material distribution, taking meeting notes and minutes, following up with stakeholders.
Assists Homeless Programs Coordinator with communications for the Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness including maintenance of OCPEH website, Facebook page, and Twitter.
Adheres to the department's safety rules and regulations.
Performs other related duties as required.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Proven effective experience in event planning strongly preferred.
Knowledge of HUD homeless priorities, HEARTH legislation, and Opening Doors, the Federal Strategic Plan to End Homelessness preferred but not required.
Knowledge of local homeless programs and services, mental health and substance abuse treatment providers preferred.  
Thorough knowledge of online social media, MS Office products,  Excel and PowerPoint required.
Ability to communicate and advocate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide array of housing and homeless stakeholders.

Education and Experience
Position is suitable for a student studying Social Work, Public Administration, Communications, Planning, Public Policy, Hospitality, or related degree who has an interest in housing and homelessness.
Prior experience with housing and homelessness is preferred but not required.
Prior experience with communications, social media, meeting coordination, and event planning is strongly preferred.
Licenses and Certifications

Physical Requirements 
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of reaching, walking, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects including the human body.
Must possess the visual acuity to operate a computer terminal. 
Worker is subject to inside environmental conditions.
Worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work).
