Development Associate, Families Moving Foward


Families Moving Forward (FMF) seeks candidates for the position of Development Associate. Applications will be reviewed starting July 31, 2017 and will continue to be accepted until the position is filled.

About FMF
Families Moving Forward (FMF) offers a temporary home to families with children in the crisis of homelessness.  Working together, we create a path to stability and self-sufficiency through personalized services and ongoing community support. FMF was created in 2016 after the successful merger of Genesis Home (GH, 1989) and Durham Interfaith Hospitality Network (DIHN, 1994). The recent expansion of the former GH has increased the capacity to serve more families; FMF serves up to 100 families annually with 140-180 children, making FMF the largest housing and services provider for homeless families in Durham. 

Position Summary
The Development Associate reports to the Director of Development and is responsible for implementation of best practices for the management of FMF’s Bloomerang donor and volunteer database including the assurance of data integrity, execution, and analysis, and for report customization. They have primary responsibility for maintaining FMF’s database to ensure accurate, appropriate, and timely gift processing, acknowledgement, reporting and reconciliation, and relevant donor and donor prospect tracking. Essential Duties Include:


Donor and Donation Data Management

  • Serve as the organization’s liaison with the Bloomerang donor database system and seek opportunities to improve its efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Develop and maintain efficient systems for data cleansing, data entry, gift processing, prospect research, and acknowledgement letters.
  • Handle all gifts-in-kind, including the drop-off or pick-up, data entry, acknowledgement, and storage/distribution of items.
  • Ensure excellent customer service is provided to donors, volunteers, prospects, and the public with timely and appropriate stewardship of gifts, including memorial and honorariums, tax receipting, acknowledgment letters, and phone calls.
  • Serve as an active prospect identifier, targeting prospects for personal visits and making connections between and among people, events, and programs.

Project Management and Coordination

  • Participate in developing and reaching Development goals.
  • Assist in the management of Development department grants to organize opportunities, deadlines, assignments, and status. Contribute to grant preparation which may consist of compiling grant data and writing, editing, and research. 
  • Assist in coordinating projects in an organized and timely manner including: solicitation and stewardship mailings, fundraising and donor appreciation events, and preparing materials for meetings, conferences, and events.
  • Implement and manage guest interviews and feedback processes and develop reports that track key programming metrics.
  • Attend monthly Development Committee meetings and related Special Event fundraising meetings (some after hours).
  • Coordinate the Holiday Gift Drive for our families.
  • Oversee the Barrels of Joy gift-in-kind program.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of Special Event fundraisers.

Community Development

  • Prepare and update PowerPoint presentations about FMF services and programs.
  • Attend community events on behalf of organization and conduct presentations. 
  • Assist in coordinating projects for volunteer groups and agency tours.
  • Update Social Media and website as needed.


General Administrative Support

  • Answer organization phone and administrative office door. Direct calls, answer basic agency questions, and explain the intake process to those seeking shelter. Follow up with appropriate staff when needed.
  • Maintain an organized supply of development specific materials, assist with special events, and other general administrative duties as assigned
  • Oversee the shared Google calendar for staff PTO and scheduling of the meeting areas.
  • Manage the shared Google drive to include updated materials and procedural information.
  • Inventory and order general office supplies monthly, act as primary in-office recipient of office deliveries, and provide timely notification to relevant staff.
  • Troubleshoot agency copier and other basic office equipment when needed (replacing ink/toner, fixing jams, etc.)
  • Retrieve and distribute mail promptly (from office and PO Box) and convey all donations to the Development Director for processing.
  • Monitor daily business practices to identify areas for efficiencies and/or improved practices and make suggestions for operational improvements.
  • Take minutes at monthly all-staff meetings.
  • Keep a current list of agency vendors with contact information.
  • Light housekeeping that might include running a vacuum, setting up areas for meetings, refilling soap and tidying staff restroom. All staff is responsible for their own office, but we all chip in to keep communal areas clean.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Experience, Technical Skills, and Competencies

  • BA/BS or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in Bloomerang (preferred) or similar donor database software.
  • Demonstrated ability to retrieve, analyze, and synthesize information to create accurate reports and lists.
  • Strong organizational, analytical skills. High degree of focus and attention to detail. Strong writing skills.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as Gmail, Google Calendar and Google docs is required.

  • Has strong values around Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and has a commitment to making our work more equitable.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends as required, as well as be able to lift 50lbs.
  • Understanding or interest of issues around homelessness, generational poverty, racial equity, and children’s needs. You want to see families thrive and you approach our mission with compassion and enthusiasm.

Compensation and Benefits
Salary range $28,000 - $32,000 depending on experience, with benefits.
