Several groups hit the streets of Detroit, Michigan, in April 2010 to identify homeless people most at risk of death or serious harm, with the goal of linking the most vulnerable persons to housing opportunities. The 100,000 Homes Campaign-Detroit, part of a national effort coordinated by Common Ground, spearheaded the canvassing that was conducted with the help of staff from the Corporation for Supportive Housing, the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion, the Homeless Action Network of Detroit, the Neighborhood Service Organization and Southwest Solutions. For three days, teams fanned out across the city early every morning to survey homeless people about their mental and physical health, drug and alcohol use and how long they had been without a permanent home. Respondents were then ranked on a “vulnerability index” based on their answers.  Over 211 surveys were completed.
