Data plays a crucial role in informing policy decisions about housing and services for homeless persons.  Understanding who is homeless and why they are homeless is necessary to end homelessness.

North Carolina Data

Source: Point-in-Time Count (PIT)

The Point-in-Time Count is a statewide, unduplicated count of homeless persons held each year on one night in January.  It provides us with a snapshot of who is homeless on a given night in our counties and state.

National Data

Source: Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress (AHAR)

The AHAR is an annual report on national homelessness prepared by HUD and delivered to Congress.  It draws on two main data sources: the Point-in-Time Count, which provides the number of sheltered and unsheltered homeless persons on a single night; and Homeless Management Information Systems (HMIS), which provide data on the number of sheltered homeless persons over the course of a year.
